The cotton industry is one of the main textile sectors, for your textile production volume and your exports.

The Cotton sector is closely linked to the industrialisation of European countries in the 18th and 19th centuries. This process also took place in Spain.

The Textile Sector is concentrated in the Mediterranean Region, as Catalonia is home to 60% of the overall production, followed by Valencia with 25%, although this region is specialised in linens.

The Sector is made up of small and medium, mostly family-operated enterprises with a high degree of interrelation among them. This factor is accentuated by the notable geographic concentration that exists in this industry.

The Spanish cotton industry's evolution has been very much influenced by the Spanish market's lack of openness to foreign countries, a situation that persisted until the outset of the 1960's. At that time, industry began a renovation of its structures to improve its productivity, which was quite low at that time. To support this renovation, various Plans designed to help industry were started up, in an effort to renew their machinery and eliminate obsolete production capacities.

Another industrial landmark was Spain's entrance into the EC in 1986, opening the Spanish market to international competition. Since then, the Sector's transformation has been significant in order to be able to effectively act within the new global scenario.

The Sector's companies have developed several strategies along these lines:

  • The level of the product has been improved through design and quality, abandoning low-level products.
  • An increase in the technological investment, allowing the Spanish  to be on the same level as these  existing in Europe.
  • Companies have raised the efficiency of their structures, especially in recent years.
  • Possibly, the field of foreign operations is where the companies' change in strategy is most evident. Over the last decade, they have made a major effort to be present in global markets. Thus, the industry has gone from exporting 10% of its production to the current level of 46%, with the export volume close to 863 M. euros in 2009.

The sector is facing the coming millennium with a new effort to increase its competitive capacity, especially in foreign markets. The effort of the companies is clearly seen through their participation in International Trade Shows, the acceptance of their designs and the positive image that Spanish products are acquiring throughout the World.
